This safari programme takes you to some of the remoter areas in Kenya – so remote that these areas are completely ‘off the grid’. They are completely unspoilt by technology, and here, you can totally switch off from the pressures and stresses of today’s world of mobile phones, social media and instant gratification.
Immerse yourself in the fascinating culture of the communities around, soak in the superlative views and enjoy a different adventure every day.
The first 2 days are spent in Nairobi, on the outskirts of the city, at The Emakoko located inside the Nairobi National Park. Start your safari by exploring the Nairobi National Park - a unique experience of spotting game against the backdrop of the skyscrapers of the city and the elevated tracks of the SGR.
An hour's flight from the capital city lies the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, a huge success story in wildlife conservation. Established in 1972, the conservancy having started with no rhinos, now has 169 rhinos, in addition to over 70 different animal species. Lewa is also home to the walking safari, so ensure you get in plenty of walking.
Visit the Conservancy HQ to learn about the inspirational and fascinating work done here
Take a drive along the 'Great North Road' - a superb stretch of road linking Nairobi to Moyale. After about a 3 hour drive, arrive at the Sera Conservancy - where the rhino lives in harmony with the local Samburu tribe. Black rhino horn fetches high prices on the black market, making the black rhino highly susceptible to poaching. Six years ago, 10 of these vulnerable creatures were translocated to the newly created Sera Conservancy, 54000 acres of land fenced in and equipped with state of the art security. Saruni Rhino is the only accommodation here and they offer an exciting experience - that of tracking black rhino on foot. Due to the harshness of the environment (bushy & arid) and the nature of the black rhino (massive and prone to attack if threatened), this is an adrenaline packed adventure
The last stop on this itinerary is Sarara Camp, located in the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy. This romantic tented camp overlooks a waterhole and each tent is positioned to maximise the stunning views of the Mathews Range. Complete with outdoor showers, and a rock pool with views of the distant mountains, the camp is an ideal location to explore the wilderness area that is Namumyak. Trek up the mountain to look for the ancient cycad trees, enjoying a picnic breakfast on the rocks. Visit the Singing Wells, where every family has their own well and their own song to invite their livestock to drink at the well. Last but not least, our favourite is a visit to Reteti Elephant Sanctuary to see the rescued elephants and other animals being raised by the community - a very special experience indeed!
Sorry to leave this paradise wilderness, fly back to Nairobi from Kalama airstrip, arriving in the capital city in the early afternoon hours
