OVERVIEW

Northern Kenya is one of Africa’s last true wilderness areas, allowing for the free movement of wildlife across a vast area. Explore this region in the first part of the itinerary, beginning with the Kalama Conservancy located in Samburu land, which represents a crucial migratory corridor between the northern and southern conservation areas. Continue onto the Namunyak Conservancy, a collaboration between the Samburu people and the Northern Rangelands Trust where you will experience a true sense of isolation. The last part of the itinerary visits the magical Maasai Mara Reserve, to experience the teeming herds of game it is renowned for.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival Nairobi and spend the day with giraffes and elephants

Today it’s all about settling in and then visiting & feeding the Rothschild giraffe. Later in the day, you will spend time with elephant orphans before retiring to your boutique hotel, Ololo Lodge, on the boundaries of the Nairobi National Park for dinner and overnight.

Day 02: Flight to Kalama Conservancy
Day 02: Flight to Kalama Conservancy

Your one hour flight brings you to the Kalama Conservancy, located in the ‘Big North’ area of the country. You have 2 days to explore this unspoiled wilderness which borders the Samburu National Reserve, and where leopards and elephants roam. Your guides belong to the Samburu tribe who will share with you, their ancient wisdom about the land and its wildlife. You will overnight at the Saruni Samburu Lodge with its eco-chic spacious villas with panoramic views of the ‘Northern Frontier District’ and Mt Kenya in the distance.

Day 03: Game drives & more in the Conservancy
Day 03: Game drives & more in the Conservancy

The day is spent in the Conservancy, as well as in the neighbouring Samburu National Reserve. The Samburu National Reserve is home to some rare species of game, and you will look for them and the ‘Big Five’ during a game drive in the Reserve. Later, explore the richness of the Conservancy on foot, enjoying complete privacy and exclusivity in this vast, rugged landscape. Hike up to the rocks where leopards have established their dens and marvel at the rock art on the walls. A fitting end to the day is a bush dinner under the stars, followed by a night game drive back to the lodge.

Day 04: Off to the remote Matthews Mountains
Day 04: Off to the remote Matthews Mountains

Today we are heading out to the remote and mysterious Matthews range of mountains. Occupying the area between Laikipia safari country and the barren northern areas, the range is surrounded by low lying savanna plains. Though not an area for Big Game, you will find elephant, buffalo and leopard here. Our accommodation for the next 2 nights is the Kitich Safari Camp offering a traditional safari charm where you can escape the stresses of modern day life and wind down.

Day 05: Gorgeous virgin forest, unspoiled nature and hiking

The walking in this area is superb, and you will engage in this activity while staying at Kitich. The valleys are thick with forests, and there are a couple of large rock pools perfect for swimming. Spend time with your Samburu guides and learn about their age-old customs and folklore. You will also visit Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, a fully fledged rescue centre for elephants run by the local community. The elephant rescue team works on elephant rescue, community awareness and mitigating human/wildlife conflict. After dinner at Camp, retire to the lounge to watch elephant, buffalo and occasionally the odd leopard, as they come to the river to drink.

Day 06: The Mara North Conservancy

Now, we are heading to the renowned Maasai Mara National Reserve, first stopping off at the Mara North Conservancy adjacent to the Reserve proper. A light aircraft ride brings us to the Mara North Conservancy. Our first stop is the Mara Elephant project which focuses on elephant protection in the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem, and using the approach of monitoring, evaluating and protecting. You will be given a presentation on the work that MEP is doing, after which it’s time to check into Camp. Kicheche Mara Camp, your home for the next 2 nights is located in a beautiful valley, alongside a seasonal stream. You may choose a guided walk this evening, or venture out on a game drive to catch some wildlife on camera.

Day 07: Wildlife viewing and community activities
Day 07: Wildlife viewing and community activities

Spend the day in the Conservancy, with game drives and guided walks conducted by your expert guides. If you are interested in conservation, visit the back of house to learn how the camp operates with wildlife conservation in mind. You can also visit a combination of tourism, wildlife conservation, environmental education and community based micro enterprises to give you an idea of the community and its challenges and opportunities.

Day 08: The Mara Triangle

Travel by road to the Mara Triangle, located in the Mara Reserve, and check into your lodge, Angama Mara, located high above the Mara triangle, perched on the edge of the escarpement. Angama’s experiences are specially crafted around the guest and are all about what you want to experience – be it full day game drives in the Mara Triangle, a bush walk in the forest to learn about the ways of the Maasai, enjoying a shamba – to – table lunch while taking in sweeping views of the Mara, relaxing at the lodge swimming pool, watching game from your rocking chair on the verandah…you set the pace.

Day 09: Home away from home
Day 09: Home away from home

Angama Mara will be your home for the next 2 nights – enjoy the comfort of your tented suite with full glass frontage made for amazing sunrises and a deck overhanging the Mara, as well as the guest areas - the Library with books and films on Africa and the expansive deck where you can get a panoramic view of the Mara below. Visit the craft studio where women from the local communities work at creating bespoke beaded garments, and try your hand at this craft. Last but not least, choose to have dinner in the nearby forest, complete with lanterns and a hyena chorus.

Day 10: The Maasai people
Day 10: The Maasai people

Visit a traditional Maasai manyatta, gaining an insight into the fascinating culture of the Maasai people, and learn how they are juggling their lives to embrace the new without letting go of the old. Participate in their traditional dances when they perform at the lodge in the evenings, and engage with your guides to learn more about their culture.

Day 11: Flight to Nairobi

With the end of the safari experience, you will take a flight back to Nairobi where a dayroom is booked for your ease and comfort. Transfer to the airport where you will board your departure flight, hopefully to return soon.
