OVERVIEW

This itinerary visits three of Kenya’s exceptional locations

  • The remote Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy with 850,000 acres of pristine wilderness surrounding the Matthews range of mountains
  • The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, one of the most successful conservation projects in Kenya, that protects iconic wildlife species as well as improving the lives of the communities in the area
  • Last but not least, Segera Retreat, located in the heart of Laikipia, where a beautiful relationship is created between the community, the wildlife, the landscape and the visitor.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A helicopter ride to Lake Magadi, throwing seedballs from the helicopter, and then stopping for a picnic lunch literally in the middle of nowhere.
  • Learn about the Samburu people whose age-old traditions, including the ‘Singing Wells’ are part of the fabric of the Namunyak Conservancy

Day 01: Nairobi, Magadi and the regreening of Kenya
Day 01: Nairobi, Magadi and the regreening of Kenya

Touchdown in the safari capital, Nairobi, a bustling metropolis and gateway to all the game parks and reserves in the country. Today, we are on a mission to regreen the country by taking a helicopter ride to the charcoal sites and throwing seedballs here, before proceeding to the soda laden Lake Magadi, where you will enjoy a picnic in this surreal landscape. Tonight you will overnight at the Hemingways Nairobi

Day 02: Flight to Kalama Conservancy, and onward to Namunyak

We are flying into Kalama Conservancy located in the northern part of the country, consisting of 200,000 acres of unspoilt wilderness. However our final destination today is the remote and dramatic landscape of the Namunyak Conservancy, home to one of Kenya’s largest elephant populations. Settle into your Sarara treehouse, which commands incredible views of Mt Uarges, one of the 7 sacred mountains to the Samburu, as well as views of the waterhole below that is frequented by elephant, buffalo, leopard and bushbuck among other animals.

The day is spent on various activities – day & night game drives in the conservancy, guided walks, hiking in the montane forest of the Matthews Range, and a village visit. The savannah plains and lush mountain slopes are home to elephant, leopard, reticulated giraffe, wild dog and kudu in ever increasing numbers.

This remote and dramatic landscape is also home to the local Samburu people with their age-old traditions & customs.
Head over to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, where orphaned elephants are being cared for. Watch the noontime feeding session where the hungry ellie babies come running for their bottles, after which they head out to play again

Day 05: Lewa Wildlife Conservancy

Today, we will depart on a 5 hour road journey to the Lewa Conservancy, Kenya’s leading model for wildlife conservancy and low-impact community tourism. Continue to Sirikoi Lodge which will be our home for the next two days. The lodge is located along the Sirikoi stream and all the buildings have a view of the Sirikoi waterhole. Afternoon, evening or night game drive is on schedule today.

Full day in Lewa, where the wildlife is abundant, and includes many rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, the black rhino, the white rhino, and Grevy’s zebra. You can choose to view game on a game drive, a game walk, or simply occupy a chair on the Sirikoi deck and watch the animals gather at the waterhole. Frequent sightings of leopard, lion and cheetah have been reported. Elephants can be seen at the waterhole in large numbers on a daily basis. Other activities available at extra charge include horse riding on the plains, quad bike safaris, helicopter excursions up Mt Kenya for fly fishing, or further north to explore the region. Visit the ‘behind the scenes’ operations to understand how conservation really works – this includes a visit to the Operations Room, the dog tracker unit, visiting the Lewa school and clinic and meeting the security or anti-poaching team.

Day 07: Short flight to Segera Retreat

A short flight in a light aircraft will take you from Lewa airstrip to Segera airstrip. Segera is located in its own Conservancy within Laikipia, comprising of 50,000 acres, which is only open to the guests at Segera Retreat, making for a very exclusive experience. The lodge has only 8 rooms, with stunning views of Mt Kenya. Spend the day in the Conservancy, enjoying game drives and walks in the Conservancy where you can spot all the ‘Big Five’, as well as the rarer species like wild dog, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra.

The Conservancy is managed under the 4Cs concept of Community, Commerce, Conservation and Culture. These embrace activities like a community beading group, schools including a football academy, rainwater & solar power projects, finding solutions to human/wildlife conflicts, providing a sanctuary for Patas monkeys, commercial bee keeping, various conservation practices including anti-poaching patrols, wildlife counts, removal of snares, maintenance of wildlife watering points, reafforestation, creation of an all female ranger unit, and ongoing research for conservation. You are welcome to visit any one of these projects should you wish to.

Day 09: Nay Palad
Day 09: Nay Palad

Located in Segera, and raised up in the air, offering a 360 degree view of the wilderness, is the Nay Palad Bird’s Nest, which is your overnight tonight. After your evening game drive, arrive at the Nay Palad, which is lit with lanterns, and laid out with champagne, and picnic style foods. Watch the sun set in stylish comfort, before retiring for the night in inviting beds complete with soft linens and hot water bottles.

Day 10: Last night in Kenya
Day 10: Last night in Kenya

Wake up to the sounds of the wild, and the view of elephants and giraffes drinking at the nearby river. A picnic breakfast begins the day on the right note, after which a short flight takes you to Nanyuki airstrip for your charter flight to Nairobi. An overnight at the Hemingways Nairobi completes your wonderful adventure in Kenya.
