More than 40 tribes reside in Kenya, each with their own cultures, traditions and specific regions. Of these, visitors are most intrigued by the Samburu tribe, cousins to the well known Maasai people. Although many of their cultural practices have been influenced by modern society, the Samburu still embrace many of their traditions, and this continues to fascinate and inspire visitors from around the world.
They occupy the north central region of Kenya, a region that is sparsely populated, with beautiful landcapes and an abundance of wildlife. Much of the land is now protected and the local communities are either involved in managing community run lodges and camps, or in guiding & educating visitors around the area.
Our journey takes us to three beautiful properties located in their own conservancies, with authentic encounters with communities and the wildlife that is their heritage.
After a one hour flight from Nairobi to Loisaba, you will arrive in the splendid Laikipia Plateau. Drive an hour and a half to the edge of the plateau, to the Ol Lentille Lodge, located in its own conservancy of 40,000 acres.
Get settled into your villa, where you will enjoy a private lunch and prepare for an afternoon of game viewing & sundowners, returning late in the evening hours to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
The next 2 days are filled with activities of your choice - you can climb Mt Lentille for a spectacular sunrise; enjoy a bush breakfast or a bush dinner; roam the conservancy, cruising on your quad bike or opting for the more sedate game drive vehicle; learn the art of archery or simply relax in your beautiful villa, drinking in the landscape.
Today, drive over to Tumaren Camp, the original home of Glenn and James, and your home for the next three days. Over lunch, you may want to take it easy and head out for an evening game drive. Your guide will know the current location of the best wildlife sightings. Return to Camp for dinner and overnight
For the next 2 days, you can choose to explore the Ewaso Nyiro River, either on foot or on camel. Here, you can see the elephant herds that come down to drink, as well as the other animals attracted by the water or the lusher habitat. Alternatively, for a higher adrenaline activity, you can explore the rock kopjes around Tumaren Camp, during the mornings and evenings, attempting some rock climbing as well. If you are interested in culture, the local market days fall on specific days of the week, and these are colorful gatherings of merchandise and people coming to trade as well as to socialize.
Transfer by road to the Westgate Conservancy, located just outside the Samburu National Reserve. This is a landscape dotted with mountains and wildlife and home to the Samburu tribe. Look for the Samburu Special Five (the Beisa oryx, reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Gerenuk antelope and Somali ostrich) on your afternoon game drive.
Full board and overnight at Sasaab
The next 2 days will be spent at Sasaab. Enjoy cook-out bush breakfasts in the Reserve after encountering the majestic herds of elephants for which Samburu is renowned. Learn about the myriad of birdlife on a nature walk with your guide and take in the incredible scenery from the top of ‘sundowner rock’, a magical place where you can watch the sun sink low.
Visit the local communities and learn how they balance age old traditions with modern day living.
Full board and two overnights at Sasaab
Today, you will fly back to Nairobi from Samburu airstrip. A dayroom has been reserved for you at the airport, from where you can easily catch your flight home.
