Today’s world is all about connectivity and information – social media, email, WhatsApp & zoom are all platforms we use every single day in our lives. The normal business days which used to run from 9 to 5, with weekends off, have been disrupted by the internet and mobile telephony. Today, you can be available through your phone 24/7, be it for work, business, friends or engaging in social media. Furthermore, the planet today, is more crowded than ever before.

So how does one disconnect from this stimulus overload, & overcrowded spaces to find some peace and tranquility? The answer is easy – simply go to places that are ‘Off the Grid’. And we have the perfect safari itinerary for you – 8 nights in remote Kenya going to areas where there is no mobile phone signal (or a weak one at best), where the Wi-fi is confined to the main living areas and where one can immerse fully in the natural world…completely ‘Off the Grid’.

The Emakoko in the Nairobi National Park eases you into the process. Enjoy game drives in the Park, a massage in your room, or a leisurely swim in the pool, all without the constant pinging of your mobile device. For emergencies, wifi is available in the main areas. To wean you off gently, we can organize day trips to the Giraffe Centre, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, or to shop for souvenirs.

Lewa House is the ideal spot to explore Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Consisting of family cottages and earthpods, its calm and serene atmosphere will relax you completely. Discover anew the art of conversation during communal meals, walk with the wildlife on the Conservancy, and visit the Conservancy HQ to learn its history and the amazing work being done here. Connectivity at Lewa House is intermittent and in certain spots only.

LOCATION: Lewa House, Kenya

Saruni Rhino is the only accommodation in the newly created Sera Conservancy. Wild and undiscovered, the Sera Conservancy is home to 18 black rhino, 10 of which were translocated here from elsewhere and 8 of which have since been born. Enjoy a thrilling walk, tracking the prehistoric black rhino, in this vast slice of Africa where a handful of semi nomadic Samburu tribesmen live and where the wildlife seldom come into contact with humans.

The last stop is Sarara Camp in Namumyak Wildlife Conservancy. Here, you are completely ‘off the grid’ as the only mobile tower is on the main road, an hour’s drive away. There is a lone fig tree in the area where you can catch a signal for your phone, and you can frequently find tribesmen lolling about here…waiting to make/receive a call or downloading movies or songs.

The feeling of remoteness, peace and tranquility to be found here is indescribable.

Sarara Camp is set in the lower slopes of the southern tip of the Matthews Mountains, giving you the chance to explore the montane forest habitat above camp, and the arid bushland of Samburu stretching away to the east.

Find your inner child, by hiking up the mountain to a surprise picnic breakfast, swim in the infinity rock pool overlooking the waterhole, or visit one of the nomadic communities around.

A very special place to visit is the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, where orphaned ellies and other wildlife are rescued and nurtured until they are old enough to be released into the wild. Witness the care and compassion of the keepers, which is returned many-fold by the love of the elephants, and learn why Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is so important to the community.

Another option for accommodation here is Reteti House. This 4 bedroomed house (taken on exclusive basis only) is perfect for multigenerational family groups, groups of friends or family travelling together. Located literally a 10 minute walk from the Elephant Sanctuary and with magnificent views of the Matthews Range all around, there is something special about Reteti House.

Finally, with a sigh of regret at leaving this paradise wonderland, but carrying beautiful memories, board your flight to Nairobi, and civilization.
