Tanzania – Ruaha National Park

  • Measuring 20,266 sq km, Ruaha National Park in Tanzania is as big as Tarangire National Park (Tanzania), the Ngorongoro Crater Area (Tanzania), Masai Mara (Kenya) and the South Luangwa National Park (Zambia) put together
  • The name Ruaha comes from the Hehe people’s word ‘iuvaha’ meaning ‘stream, river or brook’.
  • The Park is a transition zone between the southern Zambezian ecosystem, characterized by miombo woodland, and the eastern Sudanian ecosystem, characterized by acacia.
  • The Park has over 1600 plant species and 574 bird species.
  • This Park is home to 1 in 10 of the world’s lion population and Tanzania’s largest elephant population ranging from 9000 – 13,000 elephants.
  • Huge buffalo herds can be seen here in the dry season, holding up to 1000 buffalo.
  • Lesser seen species here are wild dog, Sable antelope, Roan antelope, Liechtenstein’s hartebeest and Lesser & Greater kudu.
