Tanzania – Nyerere National Park

  • Measuring 30,893 sq km, Nyerere National Park in Tanzania is bigger than the size of Belgium
  • Initially known as Selous Game Reserve, it was named after a British hunter who later became a conservationist called Frederick Courtney Selous who was killed in the reserve in WW1. His grave and the trenches can still be visited today. Late 2019, almost 2/3 of the reserve was turned into a National Park and renamed Nyerere, after the 1st President of the country after independence, Julius Nyerere.
  • The Park has a varied landscape, from swamps & lakes, to grasslands & woodland.
  • This Park holds one of the largest populations of African Wild Dog, also known as Painted Dog or Hunting Dog.
  • Activities in this Park include Boat Safaris, Walking Safaris, regular game drives in open vehicles and fishing – catch & release only
